Getting Here

The Rijksmuseum is located at Museumstraat 1, Amsterdam. It’s accessible by tram, bus, or a 15–20 minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station. Visitors can enjoy scenic views of the city along the way.

Important: Check the website for any temporary entrance changes or tram detours.

Visits generally last around 2–3 hours, but there is no set time limit—you may explore at your own pace.

Before You Visit

The Rijksmuseum is a large historic building with multiple floors and extensive galleries. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes for walking and be prepared to spend 2–3 hours exploring the exhibitions.

Accessibility: The museum is equipped with elevators, ramps, and wheelchair access to accommodate visitors with reduced mobility. Staff are available to provide assistance as needed.

Museum Guidelines

To ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for everyone, photography is allowed for personal use only, but flash and tripods are prohibited to protect the artworks. Food and drinks are not permitted inside the exhibition spaces, and visitors are expected to maintain a respectful and quiet atmosphere throughout the galleries. Touching any artworks or display items is strictly forbidden. Large bags and suitcases are not allowed inside the museum, but cloakrooms and nearby luggage storage facilities are available.

Opening Hours

The Rijksmuseum welcomes visitors every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, including public holidays. Planning your visit within these hours ensures you have enough time to explore the collections comfortably.

Cloakroom and Luggage Policy

A free and secure cloakroom is available at the museum entrance for coats, handbags, small backpacks, umbrellas, and school bags. Large backpacks, suitcases, folding bicycles, musical instruments, skateboards, and similar items are not permitted inside the museum. For larger items, you can use the Lockerpoint at Museumplein for a small fee. Only bags up to A4 size are allowed inside the galleries.

Visit Duration

There is no fixed time limit for exploring the museum. Visitors are free to stay inside until closing time, allowing ample opportunity to enjoy the exhibits at a comfortable pace.

Leaving and Re-Entry

Visitors are generally not allowed to exit and re-enter the museum during the day. Exceptions may be made in specific cases, but these require prior approval from the museum staff.
